5 Signs of Methamphetamine Addiction

N-Methamphetamine (commonly called Methamphetamine, Speed, Tweak or Meth) is a drug used for the treatment of ADHD or Attention Deficiency Hyperactivity Disorder and is also used to treat obesity. The drug has a strong stimulant action on the central nervous system and is hence also abused for recreational purposes. The drug is abused by people at all levels of their life (including the 8th graders) in Utah. It increases energy, concentration, and alertness and also uplifts mood. It has lethal effects, such as bleeding within the brain, seizure, psychosis, and breakdown of the skeletal muscles when consumed in higher doses. Long-term abuse of the drug leads to violent behavior, frequent mood swings, paranoia, delirium and other medical conditions and ailments. As the drug can increase sexual activity, it is abused widely as the “part and play” subculture.

The drug is abused through inhalation, injection, smoking and/or swallowing. If Meth is affecting someone in your friend’s circle or family or you yourself have been addicted to the drug, it will eventually take away all the life’s happiness and will have severe repercussions on your health and life. If you want to find out whether someone (who is your friend or family member) is abusing Meth, below are some signs that will help you find out the reality.

Substances

The room of the person you suspect of abusing Meth will have small quantities of crystals, white powders and/or syringes. You may also find soda cans (with holes at sides), small aluminum foil pieces that are crumpled, and the ball-point pen shaft pieces and remains. All these articles are used for injecting, inhaling, smoking and/or swallowing the drug.

Skin itching

People who pick their skin are more likely to abuse Meth. The picking is done quite often. Further, there would be a number of sores and acne. The obsessive and compulsive behavior is quite easily evident as the abuser may not be able to refrain from the activity even when he or she tries.

Tooth loss

Those abusing Meth may also complain of tooth loss. Tooth loss and decay with Meth abuse is a common phenomenon and is also referred to as “ Meth Mouth”. The teeth may rot, and get discolored and broken. The corrosive particles found in the drug erode the enamel and cause this effect.

Abnormally long activity stretches

Meth reduces sleep time and the abuser carries on with activities for long time periods (excessive daytime dreaming may also occur). He or she may also exhibit violent behavior during the period, and may undergo mood swings/disruptions and exhibit repetitive motor activities.

Hair Loss

The absence of nutrition in the diet leads to loss of hair in the Meth abusers. The drug also lowers appetite and further deteriorates the nutritional levels.
